The body of an unidentified immigrant is found in the Arizona Desert. In an attempt to retrace his path and discover his story, director Marc Silver and Gael Garcia Bernal embed themselves among migrant travelers on their own mission to cross the border, providing rare insight into the human stories which are so often ignored in the immigration debate. The film is in English. There is some Spanish dialogue with English subtitles.
This is the second installment of the Arkansas Times’ new film series in partnership with the Little Rock Film Fest at the CALS Ron Robinson Theater in the heart of the River Market.
El documental narra la historia de un inmigrante quien murió mientras cruzaba el desierto de Sonora en Arizona. La película sigue a Bernal mientras viaja por Honduras a través de México para cruzar la frontera estadounidense – un viaje que fue inspirado después de que oficiales de la patrulla fronteriza encontraron el cuerpo descompuesto de un inmigrante en Arizona hace cuatro años con un tatuaje que leía “Dayani Cristal.” La mayoría de la película es en inglés, pero hay algunos diálogos en español.

El Zócalo is offering a 10-week course for adults who would like to learn English. The classes will be taught at
Dee Brown Library (6325 Baseline Rd.) most Tuesdays from 5:30-7:30pm. The course began Tuesday, September 2, 2014 and concludes October 28, 2014. Free childcare will be provided. The classes are free to students and you do not have to be present for every class.

The Big Back-to-School Backpack Give Away for Low-Income Families

Children must be present to receive a free backpack. You do not have to register or show an ID. Backpacks will contain basic supplies for elementary-aged children. These backpacks contain general supplies needed, but contact your child’s school for their specific back to school list.
For the second year in a row, El Zócalo and PCDC have organized the back-to school backpack giveaway. Hopefully 250-300 Backpacks can be given away to children on August 17th. There will also be voter registration and hot dogs. The event is the day before the first day of school, which begins on Monday, August 18th for the Little Rock School District, North Little Rock School District, and the Pulaski County Special School District.
The money for the backpack supplies has been donated by Democrats, Democratic candidates, and individuals. If you would like to donate supplies for the backpacks or money to purchase supplies, they are being collected at Arkansas Democratic Party Headquarters until August 14th. Their office is located at 1300 West Capitol Ave. Little Rock, AR 72201. Backpacks, rulers, markers, pencils, basic calculators, paper, kid-friendly scissors, 3-ring binders, colored pencils, folders, and erasers are needed.
A few days before the event, volunteers will be needed to help fill the backpacks with supplies. Volunteers are also needed to be present at the event itself. If you would like to be a volunteer or donate, please contact Carlos Cervantes of the PCDC at 501-350-5107 or El Zócalo Immigrant Resource Center at 501-301-4652.
Jamie Scott and Carlos Cervantes are Co-Chairs of PCDC’s Outreach Committee and they have helped organize this event for the past few years. Scott is also the Director of Upward Bound, a federal program designed to assist first generation low-income students be prepared for college. Scott elaborates that “education is the great equalizer. Economic development starts with education. It is important for us to assist these families with school supplies. We want to give these parents the chance to send their students prepared for the first day of class.”
Last year, the event organizers held the backpack give away at the Southwest Community Center on Baseline and gave away 140 backpacks.
El Zócalo is a non-profit organization that helps immigrant families in Arkansas meet their basic needs. It is a volunteer-based organization and does not back political candidates. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/ElZocaloCenter.

Los niños tienen que estar presentes para recibir las mochilas, que son gratuitas. No tiene que registrarse ni mostrar ID.
Las mochilas contienen útiles escolares generales para niños de la primaria. Es necesario contactar la escuela para saber la lista específica para cada niño/a.
Por segundo año, El Zócalo y PCDC organizan la gran donación de mochilas. Esperamos regalar entre 250 y 300 mochilas escolares para niños de bajos recursos en el evento el 17 de agosto. También, habrá registración de votante y una botana de hot dogs. El evento es un día antes de la apertura de clases, que empiezan el lunes 18 de agosto para los distritos escolares de Little Rock, North Little Rock y el Condado de Pulaski.
Los fondos para comprar los útiles son donados por Demócratas, candidatos Demócratas e individuos. Si te gustaría donar útiles o dar una colaboración para la compra de útiles, todavía puedes. Hasta el 14 de agosto se colectan donaciones y fondos para el evento en la Arkansas Democratic Party Headquarters en 1300 W. Capitol Ave. Little Rock, AR 72201. Se necesitan mochilas, reglas, crayolas, marcadores, lápices, calculadoras básicas, papel, tijeras no-cortantes para niños, recopiladores de 3 aros, lápices de colores, folders con solapa, borradores y papel.
Algunos días antes del evento, voluntarios van a ayudar a llenar todas las mochilas. También, se necesitan voluntarios para el día del evento. Por algunos años Jamie Scott y Carlos Cervantes han dirigido el Comité de Compromiso del PCDC y este programa de mochilas escolares. Scott también es Directora de Upward Bound, un programa federal para asistir a estudiantes de bajos recursos y primera generación en estar preparados para asistir a la universidad. Scott elabora, “la educación es el gran nivelador. El desarrollo económico empieza con la educación. Para nosotros es importante asistir a estas familias con los útiles escolares. Queremos dar la oportunidad a los padres mandar a sus hijos preparados para el primer día de clase.”
El año pasado organizaron el evento en el Centro Comunitario Southwest en la calle Baseline y regalaron unas 140 mochilas.

Cooking Matters
April 7 – May 12, 2014

El Zócalo is collaborating with the First United Methodist Church and Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance to offer a free cooking course for Spanish-speakers. Cooking Matters is a six week course that teaches community members to prepare healthy meals on a limited budget. A volunteer professional chef and nutritionist will provide instruction and guidance to Latino community participants in southwest Little Rock. In addition to weekly instruction and meals, participants will receive recipes, complementary cooking equipment and food to prepare practice meals in between classes.
El Zócalo está colaborando con First United Methodist Church (5500 Geyer Springs Rd.) y Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance, para ofrecer clases de cocina. Cooking Matters enseña a preparar comidas saludables con un presupuesto limitado. Las clases se darán los días lunes de 6 a 7:30 de la tarde durante seis semanas. El curso comienza lunes el 7 de abril y dura hasta el 12 de mayo. Los participantes que van a cuatro o más de las seis clases, recibirán regalos de equipo de cocina, libro de recetas y alimentos para preparar en casa. El Zócalo helped with a free kids’ soccer clinic held on March 15 from 10am to 1pm at the Otter Creek Soccer fields. Over 50 kids ages 4 to 14 came to learn some skills! The event was organized by Rev. Jenni Duncan and its sponsors included the United Methodist Church Hispanic Ministries, St. Andrew UMC, Geyer Springs UMC, and El Zócalo. The field was full of volunteers from the Arkansas Fútbol Club, the UCA men’s soccer team, and Catholic High.
